How Are Agents Unlocked in Valorant?
Unlike traditional tactical FPS titles like Counter-Strike, players in Valorant don’t play with homogenous characters that buy in the same kind of utility (Smoke grenades, flashbangs, and stuff). While this really pushes the envelope for team composition and strategy, it does necessitate the need to unlock each agent.
To unlock any agent aside from the ones already unlocked at the start of the game, do the following steps:
- Login to your Riot ID and boot up Valorant.
- Click on the AGENTS button to navigate to the Agents roster.
- Select the agent you wish to unlock, e.g. HARBOR.
- Click ACTIVATE to activate the said agent’s contract.
- Assuming you’ve activated the said agent’s contract for the first time, it will take 125,000 XP for you to unlock them. After that, they will be playable in regular game modes (Unrated, Competitive, Swiftplay, etc).
Alternatively, you could also make up for the XP required with Valorant Points, which will cost you 200 VP to unlock each tier. In other words, at each tier of the contract’s Chapter 1, you will need the following amount of VP to instantly unlock said agent.
Chapter 1 Tier | XP Required | VP Required |
Tier 0 | 125,000 | 1000 |
Tier 1 | 100,000 | 800 |
Tier 2 | 75,000 | 600 |
Tier 3 | 50,000 | 400 |
Tier 4 | 25,000 | 200 |
Tier 5 | 0 | 0 |

How to Get XP in Valorant to Unlock Agents?
Now that you’ve activated the contract of the agent you wish to unlock, it’s time to grind out the 125,000 XP needed to unlock them. Aside from buying the battle pass, which gives you a permanent XP boost for the rest of the Act, we recommend two main tips for free-to-play players.
Complete Daily and Weekly Missions
As the name implies, you get daily missions on a daily basis, whereas you get Weekly missions on a weekly basis.
- Daily missions are much simpler in nature and include tasks like getting first bloods, killing a certain amount of enemies, dealing a certain amount of damage, and picking up ultimate orbs, amongst others. Each daily mission gives 2000 XP.
- Weekly missions can take a little bit of time to grind out and are often a more stretched-out version of the aforementioned daily missions. A few unique weekly missions, however, include playing 10 games and playing 150 rounds. Each weekly mission gives 16,830 XP.
In totality, you can get up to 78,490 XP every week just by completing daily and weekly missions.
Playing Different Game Modes
Aside from the standard unranked/ unrated and ranked / competitive playlist, Valorant also features a variety of other game modes that vary in terms of duration and XP. As such, it is wise to utilise your time smartly and play a variety of gamemodes to grind out the most amount of XP in a particular sitting.
Conclusion
Although Valorant features a total of four roles (Duelists, Initiator, Sentinels, and Controllers), there are a variety of agents in each role that make team composition all the more important in the game’s current landscape. As such, it is almost necessary to have all of the game’s agents unlocked so you’re always ready to fill in the required role regardless of what map you’re playing on.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Agents Are Already Unlocked in Valorant?
Upon registering a new account, players are given access to five agents right from the get-go: Brimstone (Controller), Sova (Initiator), Sage (Sentinel), Jett (Duelist), and Phoenix (Duelist). Aside from that, upon completing the initial tutorials of the game, players are also given the opportunity to unlock an agent instantly.
What Is the First Agent Should I Unlock?
If you’re a duelist, then Reyna is a very standard agent to unlock first. If you’re an Initiator, then KAY/O is a solid initiator that is played on a variety of maps. If you’re a sentinel, then Cypher offers great value all over in terms of watching flanks and anchoring sites. If you’re a controller, then Omen is a great agent to unlock first due to his unique aggressive utility.
Should I Spend Valorant Points on Unlocking Agents?
We do not recommend spending your hard-earned Valorant Points on unlocking agents, as XP is not that hard to grind. Simply completing daily and weekly missions on top of playing a variety of game modes regularly should unlock your favourite agent in no time!
